LASIK Vision Correction has enabled millions of people who are nearsighted, farsighted or astigmatic to reduce or eliminate their dependency on glasses or contact lenses. LASIK is a procedure that reshapes the curvature of the cornea using a cool beam of light from the excimer laser.
LASIK is performed by folding back a microscopic layer of the cornea. Using the excimer laser, the surface layers of the cornea are reshaped. The flap is then gently repositioned as a protective layer.
Following LASIK, clear vision can be achieved as early as the next morning. Most patients can return to work the very next day, with minor visual fluctuations within the first week or two. Sensation of some dryness on the eye can be expected during the recovery period.
During the LASIK procedure, anesthesia is achieved with numbing eye drops, and no stitches or needles are used. Most patients enjoy improved vision by the very next day. The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes for both eyes.
LASEK is a variant of LASIK, in that a very thin layer of tissue is separated from the surface of the cornea. This 50 micron layer is re-positioned following laser reshaping of the cornea. Same advanced laser is used in both procedures. LASEK is preferred in cases where the cornea is not thick enough to undergo LASIK. The recovery time is prolonged by 3 to 7 days. Some discomfort is common within the first 48 hours.
CK is approved for treatment of reading glasses (presbyopia) utilizing MONOVISION or BLENDED VISION. CK uses radio waves to reshape the cornea. It is performed in less than 5 minutes, with anesthesia eye-drops. It involves no cutting or discomfort during the procedure. Some irritation is common over the next 24 to 48 hours.
CUSTOM LASIK is a procedure that delivers a unique correction for each individual. It employs the VISX Wavescan/Star S4 laser or Bausch & Lomb's Zyoptix laser system to capture a "fingerprint" of the eye that is 25 times more precise than measurements made using previous methods. Wavefront technology evaluates more than nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism; it captures other, more specific imperfections in each individual's vision. The data is then used to generate an individualized treatment for a CustomVue procedure, with the potential to achieve better vision than with contacts or glasses.
