ZEISS SMILE Pro with VisuMax 800

What is SMILE Pro and How Does it Work?

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) has long been recognized as one of the most advanced laser vision correction options in the world. Manhattan LASIK Center was proud to be the first vision center in the Northeast to introduce the original SMILE procedure, and remains among the most experienced providers of SMILE in the United States.

Today, we’re once again leading the way with ZEISS SMILE Pro: the latest generation of SMILE technology. Built on the groundbreaking VisuMax 800 platform from ZEISS, SMILE Pro refines every step of the procedure, offering patients an experience that is faster, more precise, and more comfortable than ever before.

Rather than creating a flap, the SMILE Pro laser gently reshapes the cornea through a tiny micro-incision, preserving more corneal tissue and nerve integrity. The entire process takes just seconds per eye, helping patients enjoy clearer vision and a smoother recovery – typically returning to normal activities the very next day.

At Manhattan LASIK Center, being first means more than offering the latest technology – it means combining innovation with unmatched surgical experience, so every patient benefits from the safest and most advanced vision correction available.

Step 1: Lenticule Creation

It takes less than 10 seconds of laser time on each eye to create the lenticule, a thin contact lens-shaped layer of tissue, just beneath the surface of the eye.

Step 2: Lenticule Removal

The lenticule is then removed from a tiny 3.5mm incision created by the laser, with minimal disruption to the cornea.

Step 3: Vision Correction

No flap. No burning smell. No noise. Just clear vision. The removal of the lenticule changes the way the light focuses onto the eye, allowing the patient to see clearly again. The incision heals on its own in a few days.

“MLC is thrilled to share that we are the FIRST and ONLY Center in the Tri-State area to offer the latest advancement: ZEISS SMILE Pro. As the pioneers of LASIK & ZEISS SMILE in the Northeast over 3 decades, we are proud to bring our patients this exciting next-generation technology – delivering enhanced patient comfort and 2x quicker laser treatment times.”

– Dr. Niksarli, Medical Director at MLC, Most Experienced SMILE & LASIK Surgeon in U.S.

Benefits of SMILE Pro

Why Choose SMILE Pro at Manhattan LASIK Center?

Frequently Asked Questions

For many patients, yes. SMILE Pro provides similar or better visual results with a minimally invasive procedure leading to a faster treatment and recovery, less corneal dryness, and a healthier and stronger cornea. SMILE Pro is also more suitable for patients who are not a LASIK candidate due to thin cornea or active lifestyles.

Both LASIK and SMILE use the same principle of “tissue removal from the Central Cornea to adjust the eye’s focusing power”. Where they differ is HOW THEY ACCOMPLISH this goal.

LASIK is much more invasive because a flap is cut on the corneal surface, followed by evaporation of corneal tissue by a second Excimer laser.

SMILE is minimally invasive because it’s a flapless procedure and there is no burning of corneal tissue. The corneal tissue, lenticule is gently created and separated by the AI-assisted ZEISS Femtolaser and subsequently removed by the surgeon through a tiny opening. SMILE spares the very precious corneal tissue, thus minimizes postoperative dry eye symptoms, and ensures a stronger and more stable cornea for the long term.

No. Patients report only slight pressure for a few seconds. There’s no burning smell or discomfort.

Most people return to normal activities within 24 hours.

If you’re nearsighted with or without astigmatism, and are over 18, you may be eligible. Schedule a free consultation to find out.
