SMILE, which stands for Small Incision Lenticular Extraction, has revolutionized the world of laser vision correction since earning FDA approval in 2016. SMILE differs from LASIK in that it does not require creating a corneal flap, making it a minimally invasive option. In this procedure, the surgeon uses the ZEISS VisuMax femtosecond laser to precisely form a small, lens-shaped piece of tissue within the cornea, known as a lenticule, which is then removed through a tiny opening about the size of a pencil tip. This incision is approximately 80% smaller than the one used in traditional LASIK, resulting in less disturbance to the eye and a smoother, more comfortable recovery.
