ReLex SMILE

SMILE, also known as Small Incision Lenticule Extraction, is a vision correction procedure to improve nearsightedness. This procedure can also be called ReLEx, Refractive Lenticule Extraction. Only performed at a few laser eye surgery clinics across the United States, this is one of the newest and most recent vision correction procedures. Only one laser is required to perform this procedure and that is called the Zeiss VisuMax femtosecond laser. The laser will create a lenticle, which is a disc shaped tissue, inside the cornea. The lenticle will be extracted through a minuscule incision of less than 4 mm.

Lasik vision correction has enabled millions of people who are nearsighted, farsighted or who have astigmatism to reduce or eliminate their dependency on glasses or contact lenses. Lasik is a procedure that reshapes the curvature of the cornea using a cool beam of light from the excimer laser.

Lasik is performed by folding back a microscopic layer of the cornea. Using the excimer laser, the surface layers of the cornea are reshaped. The flap is then gently repositioned as a protective layer.

Following Lasik, clear vision can be achieved as early as the next morning. Most patients can return to work the very next day, with minor visual fluctuations within the first week or two. Sensation of some dryness on the eye can be expected during the recovery period.

During the Lasik procedure, anesthesia is achieved with numbing eye drops, and no stitches or needles are used. Most patients enjoy improved vision by the very next day. The procedure takes about 10 minutes for both eyes.

Custom Lasik is a procedure that performs a unique correction for each individual. It employs the VISXwavescan/Star S4 laser system, to capture a fingerprint of the eye. Wavefront technology evaluates more than nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism; it captures other, more specific imperfections in the eye. The data is then used to generate an individualized treatment for a CustomVueprocedure.

No-Blade LASIK or IntraLASIK

IntraLasik is a fully computerized, all-laser technology with its unique IntraLasik software, that allows the surgeon with a minimally invasive approach to create the corneal flap during Lasik surgery. Unlike traditional Lasik, no blades or mechanical devices are used. Instead the computer aligns the laser pulses in a plane where the Lasik flap is created with utmost precision and comfort.

LASEK, Epi-Lasik, PRK

Also known as Advanced Surface Treatment, these procedures have the following in common: Only a very thin layer of epithelial flap is scraped off the surface of the cornea, which will heal back over the next 3 to 4 days. Thus the recovery time is delayed by several days compared to Lasik or IntraLasik. They typically are performed in cases where the cornea is not thick enough for Lasik or IntraLasik. The same accurate lasers are used to reshape the surface of the eye. Therefore, the end result achieved is the same as Lasik or IntraLasik.
