Your cornea is only about half a millimeter thick, and correcting your vision means reshaping it by a matter of microns. Work that precise is hard to do by hand, even for the steadiest surgeon, which is where laser technology comes in. The technology behind the laser directly affects how accurate your correction is, how comfortable the procedure feels, and how quickly your eyes heal.
At Manhattan LASIK Center, a leading refractive surgery practice in New York, technology sits at the center of every treatment plan. Our surgeons focus on laser vision correction, and MLC is the first and one of the only practices in the New York Tri-State area to offer ZEISS SMILE Pro.
Here is a look at the ZEISS laser platform and why it makes a difference for your eyes!
What Does a Laser Platform Actually Do During Vision Correction?

A laser platform is the system that reshapes or separates corneal tissue to correct your vision. Most modern procedures rely on a femtosecond laser, which fires extremely short pulses of light. Each pulse lasts a tiny fraction of a second and uses very little energy, so the laser can separate tissue with accuracy measured in microns.
That level of accuracy matters because your cornea is thin. Small differences in depth or shape can change how light focuses on your retina. During treatment, the laser controls:
- Depth: how far into the cornea each pulse reaches
- Shape: the exact contour of the flap or tissue being removed
- Centration: where the treatment lines up on your eye
- Speed: how long your eye needs to stay still under the laser
- Energy: how much laser power reaches the corneal tissue
A better platform handles each of these with more consistency, which gives your surgeon more control over your results.
Inside the ZEISS VisuMax: Features Built Around Your Eye
The ZEISS VisuMax femtosecond laser was designed around the natural shape of the human eye. Your cornea is curved, and the VisuMax uses a curved contact surface that matches it. Many other lasers flatten the cornea during treatment, which can raise the pressure inside your eye. The VisuMax makes gentle contact instead, and the contact glass is sized to fit each patient’s anatomy. Patients often say the contact feels similar to putting in a soft contact lens.
Surgeons at Manhattan LASIK Center use the VisuMax to create 80-micron flaps for ultra-thin flap bladeless LASIK, which are among the thinnest in the world, and to perform ZEISS SMILE, which requires no flap at all.
Key VisuMax features and what they mean for you:
- Curved contact lens: less pressure and a more comfortable experience
- Low-energy pulses: gentle tissue separation with fine accuracy
- Bladeless design: no blade is used to alter your cornea.
- Flexible treatment options: one platform for both bladeless LASIK and SMILE
- Consistent flap thickness: more corneal tissue preserved during LASIK
“At -4.25 in both eyes, I went to 4 different consultations before choosing Manhattan LASIK Center. Dr. Niksarli and his team made me feel completely confident. I loved learning about the technology behind SMILE. SMILE took less than a minute, and changed my outlook on life.” –Joelle R., SMILE Patient
ZEISS VisuMax 800 and SMILE Pro

The ZEISS VisuMax 800 is the newest generation of the platform, and it powers ZEISS SMILE Pro.
During SMILE Pro, the laser creates a thin, contact-lens-shaped layer of tissue called a lenticule inside the cornea. This takes less than 10 seconds of laser time per eye. Your surgeon then removes the lenticule through a tiny 3.5mm opening, and the cornea’s new shape corrects nearsightedness and astigmatism.
The VisuMax 800 also includes AI-assisted centration and alignment tools. One system uses the center of your pupil to line up the treatment before the laser docks. Another adjusts the treatment pattern if your eye rotates slightly when you lie down, which is natural and common.
Because SMILE Pro does not create a corneal flap, fewer corneal nerves are disturbed. That leads to a lower risk of dry eye symptoms for many patients after surgery compared with flap-based LASIK. The small incision also helps the cornea keep more of its natural strength.
How SMILE Pro compares with earlier laser treatment:
- Laser time: around 8 seconds per eye, compared with 30 to 60 seconds for many traditional LASIK treatments
- Opening size: a 3.5mm incision, far smaller than a LASIK flap
- Flap: none
- Comfort: shorter suction time and less pressure on the eye
- Sensory experience: no noise and no burning smell during the laser step
Why Technology Alone Isn’t Enough
A laser is only as good as the surgeon using it. Our surgeons have collectively performed more than 110,000 laser vision correction procedures. Dr. Kevin Niksarli, the Founder and Medical Director, has personally performed more than 80,000, and Dr. Mark Buchsbaum has performed more than 30,000.
That experience guides how the team applies the technology to your eyes
Before recommending any procedure, the team performs comprehensive diagnostic testing, including high-resolution corneal mapping. These images show your corneal thickness, shape, and any irregularities in fine detail. Your surgeon uses them to decide whether bladeless LASIK, SMILE, SMILE Pro, or another option fits you best.
Manhattan LASIK Center does not take a one-size-fits-all approach, and results can vary from patient to patient.
Questions to Ask About Laser Technology at Your Consultation

A few direct questions can tell you a lot about the care you’ll receive. Bring these to your consultation:
- Which laser platform will you use for my procedure?
- Will my treatment involve a flap, or is it flapless?
- How long will the laser be on my eye?
- How does the system track and center my eye during treatment?
- What diagnostic imaging will you use to plan my correction?
- How many procedures has my surgeon performed on this platform?
Clear answers help you feel confident before you commit.
At Manhattan LASIK Center, the team walks you through the technology behind each option, so you know what to expect on surgery day.
